Costa Rica, April 9, 2021 – Viant, a life sciences company, announced that it has completed a major expansion at its medical device manufacturing plant located in Heredia, Costa Rica.
The company has invested in additional capacity to meet market demand for surgical devices, including electromechanical devices. This expansion will benefit all potential customers who seek speed in accessing high-quality, complex medical devices.
Carlos Alvarado, President of the Republic, commented that this new expansion will further boost the country’s medical device industry. “We are grateful to Viant for expanding its manufacturing plant and for the high-quality jobs it creates. As a nation, we have demonstrated that we have the talent necessary to empower and work hand-in-hand with companies that put their trust in Costa Rica. We are committed to continued collaboration with the private sector, to create the necessary conditions to attract greater investment and benefit thousands of families with stable and high-quality jobs”, added the president.
Kevin Quirós, Director of Viant Costa Rica, commented, “Viant Costa Rica is experiencing strong growth – and not by chance. This country offers ideal conditions for a successful business model and the possibility of establishing a competitive cost structure, supported by a strategic geographic location and, importantly, the tremendous talent found here. We are delighted that our growth will have a positive impact on our current and future customers and partners. And this is just the beginning."
The company’s expansion began in 2020 and included 14,000 square-feet (1,300 square-meters) of assembly space and plastic molding in ISO Class 8 clean rooms, and retrofitted 15,000 square-feet (1,400 square-meters) of additional space for warehousing, offices, and support capacity, for a total 180,000 square-feet (16,700 square-meters) over four buildings.
Andrés Valenciano, Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Trade, added, “Costa Rica’s value proposition is based on people, planet, and prosperity; this has been key to attracting companies that want to invest with purpose –companies like Viant. This growth, and the subsequent announcement of 300 new jobs, is a recognition of the many virtues that Costa Rica offers: our political and economic stability, legal security, human talent, and our vision for sustainable development. Likewise, this is a great responsibility, as it reminds us that, in order to attract business with purpose, we must continue working diligently to constantly improve our country's competitive conditions and public policies, while strengthening our human talent, so that more and more companies, such as Viant, are able to carry out effective and efficient productive operations, contributing positively and sustainably to the development of our nation.”
This expansion includes 15 new molding machines that complement the liquid silicone rubber (LSR) molding capacity that was added in 2020. Costa Rica facility growth will also add up to 300 jobs in the Heredia area; this growth is already underway, and will continue throughout 2021.
Jorge Sequeira Picado, Managing Director of CINDE, stated “Exports in the life sciences sector have grown, on average, 13% each year since 2010, reaching almost US$4 billion in 2020. CINDE’s projections estimate that, by the end of 2022, exports could reach US$5 billion. We thank Viant for its continued trust in Costa Rica's value proposition: People, planet, and prosperity, in response to client demands under Industry 4.0.”
Located within the Metropolitan Free Zone, Viant Costa Rica’s plant is a high-performance site, specializing in thermoplastic and elastomeric molding, extrusion, and complex assembly for interventional, surgical, and other medical devices and their components.
