Stryker inaugurates Financial Services Center in Costa Rica to Support its Operations in the Americas

  • The company has hired 135 employees in the country and will be hiring 52 more in early 2020.

San José, Costa Rica. December 18, 2019. Stryker, one of the world’s leading medical technology companies, inaugurated today a new financial services center in Costa Rica, which provides support for all its financial activities in the Americas. The operation is located in the San Antonio Business Park in Heredia, where the company opened its offices earlier this year in April.

With the rapid expansion of its operations, the company already has hired 135 employees in the country and will be recruiting at least 52 more in early 2020 to provide support with general accounting and accounts payable and receivables. Stryker is expanding its office space to accommodate the growth and new talent.

The company will hire candidates with finance and accounting skills, experience in executing finance and accounting processes, and experience working virtually with teams in other countries. Minister of Foreign Trade, Dyalá Jiménez, who participated in the inaugural event, noted that “our country is becoming a favorite destination for companies in the medical sector to settle. An example is the company Stryker, a company focused on medical technologies, which announced the expansion of a financial services center, from which it will serve the Americas. It will employ around 180 employees next year, which we certainly celebrate. We thank the company for this vote of confidence and we pledge to continue working to adapt to the needs of the international market” said the Minister of Foreign Trade.

“Stryker opened an office in Costa Rica due to its strong economic environment, its highly skilled workforce and its proximity to both our U.S. and Latin American employees and customers,” said Rodrigo Cal, Vice President, Global Finance Shared Services, Stryker. “We look forward to adding additional employees to our talented team who want to work for a global company that improves patient and hospital outcomes every day”.

Jorge Sequeira, Managing Director at CINDE commented “Stryker, a company in the medical device sector, one of the fastest growing in the country, decided to install its first operation in Costa Rica through a financial services center, which comes to be part of the most dynamic sector in job creation in Costa Rica. In fact, CINDE reported yesterday that all the strategic sectors of the country reported a total accumulated of 118,245 jobs in 2019. We trust that the quality of human talent allows Stryker to consolidate its service center and that a future expands and diversifies its operation in the country".

A Growing and Diversifying Industry
The medical technology industry is extremely dynamic in the Costa Rican economy. Based on CINDE data, as of last year the life sciences sector consisted of more than 70 companies generating close to 27,000 direct jobs in the country. In comparison with 2000, employment grew by 18 times and the number of companies increased by nine times. Exports of medical devices totaled – also in 2018 – some $3,308 million, making Costa Rica the second largest exporter in this category in Latin America.

Costa Rica attracted 64 new companies from the Life Sciences sector, between 2000 and 2018.

This has also meant an industry diversification that also attracts shared services centers to provide support, from Costa Rica, to their operations and financial, technology and other activities in other parts of the world.
