Nextern Launches Design and Manufacturing Operation to Create 200 Direct Jobs in Costa Rica

  • The multinational invested US$1.3 million on the construction of the facility dedicated to designing, manufacturing, and improving medical devices.
Cartago, Costa Rica. December 2, 2021. Nextern -a collaborative medical design company- inaugurated its new manufacturing, design, and engineering facilities in La Lima Free Zone, in Cartago. This is the fourth manufacturing site for the company, with other locations in Minnesota, the United States, Vietnam, and China.

The company has 45 employees in the country and plans to hire 200 more in 2022-2023. These new facilities, which cover 4572 square meters, required an investment of US$1.3 million. Nextern will duplicate this footprint during 2022.

Nextern is a U.S.-based multinational company that works with innovators, physicians, and partners to create, modify, optimize and manufacture medical devices. One of the company's primary projects is the development of catheters that provide access and therapy for structural heart, neurovascular and electrophysiology procedures. These devices work with electromechanical systems that integrate software, such as radiofrequency and steam ablation, pneumatics, or robotics.

The new site will not only house the manufacture of its well-known medical devices but will also function as a design and engineering research center for the development of new products. Additionally, local professionals who join the company will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills to innovate in the medical field.

"We chose Costa Rica for its political stability, the vision of sustainable development, and its strategic location close to our North American market. But in particular, we chose this country for the high quality of its human talent and high education. In addition, part of the processes we will carry out in the country are in innovation, so we hope that this new project will reflect the entrepreneurial spirit and creative mind of Costa Ricans," said Richard Farrell, CEO of Nextern.

Andrés Valenciano, the Minister of Foreign Trade, also mentioned that, “From January to October 2021, Costa Rica's exports reached record numbers – a growth of 26% over 2020. During this period, the medical device sector demonstrated a significant increase [in exports], making it the main export sector for Costa Rica. Nextern's investment in Costa Rica today strengthens the position we already hold as a hub for the health sciences, mainly in medical devices. In addition to manufacturing plants in Minnesota, Vietnam, and China, Nextern's [Costa Rica] center will be the fourth of its kind to manufacture its renowned medical devices, as well as to conduct research and design. We appreciate their vote of confidence and reiterate that, from the foreign trade sector, we will continue promoting quality opportunities such as the one presented today to the Costa Rican people.”

Jorge Sequeira, the Managing Director of CINDE, commented, “We are pleased to add Nextern to our cluster of medical device companies; already, more than 80 sector companies trust in Costa Rica for their growth. Nextern's arrival is also a reflection of the potential Costa Rica has to contribute to high value-added processes, thanks to the quality of our human talent, a solid supply chain, and our standing as a proven hub for the manufacture and export of medical devices. According to export data, between January and October 2021, this sector experienced a growth of US$1.166 billion, equivalent to a 38% increase over the same period in 2020."

Nextern maintains its hiring processes open through the email HRCR@nextern.com, searching for bilingual professionals in process engineering, product development, and quality. For the production of the devices, opportunities are available for manufacturing operators with at least five years of experience in the sector.
