New DHL Strategy Drives Medical Device Companies to Expand Production in Costa Rica

  • The first Free Zone regime warehouse arrives after a recent $25M acquisition of the DHL Airport Terminal.
  • In Costa Rica, the company already offers logistics and inventory services, as well as a service center that provides finance and accounting support to the Americas.
Alajuela. October 27, 2022. DHL, a leading logistics company, announced the start of operations at its new 3,100 m2 warehouse, located in El Coyol de Alajuela. There, they launch a project to promote client growth, primarily in the medical device industry. The company's goal with this project is for its clients to use space currently allocated for storage, in order to increase production. The Free Zone regime will allow the company to provide fast and flexible service, as well as extended hours.

John Otto Knohr, DHL Global CEO of Forwarding for Central America and the Caribbean, was present at the warehouse opening and commented, “We have detected a need for storage support and end-to-end service for our clients, mainly for medical device companies. With this visionary strategy, we look to provide logistics services at El Coyol, so that laboratories can transform their storage area into production area.”

“This is the second investment we have made in the last two years. Deutsche Post DHL Group has invested more than $25 million in Costa Rica and trusts the country to expand its operations, which connect and provide services safely and reliably, thus facilitating sustainable trade flows worldwide,” Knohr added.

Manuel Tovar, Minister of Foreign Trade, commented “we celebrate the expansion of DHL and we appreciate the trust they place in Costa Rica. These initiatives contribute significantly to the economic development of our country, while contributing to well-being, increasing exports and expanding the connectivity we maintain with the world. From the government side we continue to strengthen and expand the commercial platform of the country, so that more commercial operators, exporters and consumers benefit from the commercial opening; we are an ideal location to develop innovative logistic projects”.

Jorge Sequeira, Managing Director of CINDE, mentioned that “a fundamental factor in achieving Costa Rica's positioning as an ideal destination for multinational company operations, is a perfectly coordinated logistics ecosystem and complete supply chain continuity, even during the pandemic. Thanks to this, leading global companies are able to export their products to the most demanding markets in the world. One of these sectors is the medical device industry – Costa Rica's #1 export product – which can continue to grow and create jobs in our country, thanks to companies like DHL."

For more than 17 years, DHL Global Forwarding has operated in Costa Rica, where it offers a wide range of logistics and inventory services, and also operates a service center that provides finance and accounting support to the Americas. Together, these services provide employment to more than 2,500 Costa Ricans across all business units. Months ago, the company made the decision to buy the terminal located next to Juan Santamaría International Airport.
