Hologic Costa Rica Receives Prestigious Sustainability Award

  • Manufacturing Leadership Council spotlights team’s strategic success in reducing waste, the latest recognition for Hologic Costa Rica’s increasingly eco-friendly operations.
San Jose, Costa Rica. April 28, 2022.Hologic Costa Rica, a medical technology innovator primarily focused on improving women’s health, announced today that it has received a 2022 Manufacturing Leadership Award for outstanding achievement in waste reduction.

The prestigious honor, given in the category of “Sustainability and the Circular Economy,” comes from the Manufacturing Leadership Council. It recognizes the first phase of Hologic Costa Rica’s robust strategies for minimizing waste at the team’s El Coyol campus.

Those strategies include improving manufacturing procedures to increase waste diversion; providing more recycling bins; creating a dedicated waste-segregation area; installing prominent signage about recycling; and strengthening the team’s “green” culture to further emphasize that waste reduction benefits both the environment and Hologic’s financial health. Employee engagement has been central to every aspect of this campaign.

Hologic Costa Rica aims to reach “zero waste” status within several more years. The Zero Waste International Alliance defines this designation as “The conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse and recovery of products, packaging and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water or air that threaten the environment or human health.”

“We are very excited to receive this recognition and I am also very proud of the entire team as sustainability is one of the fundamental pillars of the company's overall ethos. We believe that an engaged and talented workforce will deliver the best possible results,” said Nilo Caravaca, Hologic’s Vice President of Operations for Costa Rica and Latin America.

The new award adds to a growing level of recognition for Hologic Costa Rica’s excellence in sustainability. Those distinctions include a Blue Flag Award from the Costa Rican government and numerous honors from the National Association of Manufacturers for reducing energy use and making a significant investment in solar-power generation. Last year, the association named Hologic Costa Rica as “Leading Manufacturer of the Year” for small to midsized companies.

Jorge Sequeira, the Managing Director of CINDE, expressed his congratulations Hologic and said “Costa Rica has proven to deliver on sustainable productivity for corporations, reflected in its commitment for people, planet and prosperity.
