Heraeus Medevio Opens Phase II, Breaks Ground on Phase III of its Costa Rica Site Expansion, Adding 1,500 Jobs

San José, Costa Rica. July 14, 2023. Heraeus Medevio, contract design and manufacturing partner to the world’s largest medical device OEMs, announced the completion of Phase II and groundbreaking on Phase III of its Costa Rica site expansion.

With an investment of over $20 million and a projection of 500 new jobs, Heraeus Medevio officially completed Phase II of its Costa Rica site in the La Lima Free Trade Zone industrial park on Wednesday, May 24.

This expansion doubles the site’s size to over 108,000 square feet (approximately 10,000 m2), adding class seven, eight, and controlled environment (ISO class nine equivalent) clean rooms.

Heraeus Medevio’s Costa Rica site manufactures guidewires, snare kits, and neuromodulation leads for the medical device industry, and added additional capabilities, including catheters, to its production lines this year.

“Heraeus’ expansion in Costa Rica, particularly in the La Lima Free Trade Zone, is due to the high level of talent we have found in the country, in addition to the country being a growth destination,” affirmed the site’s General Manager René Cardona.

Phase III Groundbreaking
Heraeus Medevio broke ground on Phase III of its Cartago expansion in June 2023, initiating construction of 118,402 additional square feet (approximately 11,000 m2) and an investment of around $35 million. Phase III will create an additional 1,000 jobs in the region.

Construction will start in the third quarter of this year, with expected completion in late 2024.

La Lima Free Trade Zone General Manager Fernando Carazo noted, “from the moment the park opened its doors, we have focused on attracting foreign direct investment with a top-tier profile of advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and logistics centers, characteristics that have made it possible for prestigious companies, such as Heraeus, to expand their operations.”

President of Heraeus Medevio, Peter Reimer, sees the expansion as an opportunity to explore new ways of supporting current and future partnerships. He states, “Heraeus Medevio is on track for double-digit growth, continuing toward our vision of improving 100 million lives every year. I am excited for operations to begin in our Phase II building and look forward to the continued expansion of partnerships with our customers in Phase III.”

Upon completion of its third phase, Heraeus Medevio will occupy 226,042 square feet (approximately 21,000 m2) and employ about 1,900 people in Cartago.
