FlowZone Chooses Orotina to Relocate Operations from Asia to Costa Rica

  • U.S. company will be headquartered outside the Greater Metro Area and has chosen Costa Rica after spending the last 10 years in China.
  • The company manufactures Lithium-Ion battery powered automatic sprayers used for spraying in agriculture, pest control, sanitization, and other essential applications.
  • President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, visited La Ceiba Free Trade Zone in Orotina, where FlowZone will establish and reaffirmed the continued commitment to attracting FDI and employment.
Orotina, Costa Rica. September 29, 2021. The US company, FlowZone SRL, has selected Costa Rica to expand its operations outside of China. The company manufactures automatic sprayers systems to atomize pest control, agricultural as well as electrostatic sprayers for disinfection.

“Our products facilitate that work, as they do not require manual pumping to develop spraying pressure and instead use lithium-Ion rechargeable batteries that allow for an efficient and consistent flow rate, which protects the environment from chemical overuse and increases application speed. FlowZone also manufactures, by contract, other products for industrial and consumer use,” explains Joe Gustafson, co-founder of FlowZone.

The company has kept operations in China since 2011. However, driven by the rethinking of global value chains due to the pandemic, Flow Zone’s founders decided to expand their operations from Asia to Latin America, with Costa Rica as the chosen country.

FlowZone will establish operations at La Ceiba Industrial Park, in Orotina, Alajuela. This Wednesday, Carlos Alvarado, President of Costa Rica, visited La Ceiba Free Trade Zone as part of his Central Pacific tour, prior to a session of the Governing Council, to be held on tomorrow in Puntarenas.

The Costa Rican president was very pleased with FlowZone's announcement and highlighted the investment's particular relevance, as Costa Rica becomes the first country in Latin America to host the company's operations; additionally, the investment is made outside the Greater Metropolitan Area (GMA), thus contributing to boosting the regional economy.

"We continue working to develop Costa Rica's 2050 Territorial Strategy, in an attempt to attract foreign direct investment and employment to the country's diverse regions, though sophistication and modernization of our economic activities, thus allowing us to further enhance human capital," added President Alvarado.

Steve Norris, co-founder of FlowZone, added, “Costa Rica offered a highly-educated population, sophisticated supply chain and is ideally located in an attractive logistic region with easy access to the Pacific and Atlantic Ports. CINDE accelerated our decision-making by about 12 months as they took the investigative legwork out of the equation and provided immediate viable solutions."

The company will make an initial investment of US $2,500,000, which will increase in the next two years. The company will hire ten people in the upcoming months, with plans to grow to 40 collaborators over the next three years.

Andrés Valenciano, Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Trade, specified, “Global trends have positioned Costa Rica as a strategic ally in logistics and transportation for the international trade of goods and services. Today, FlowZone has announced its decision to launch operations in the country, recognizing Costa Rica as an ally not only due to our geographical location, but also because of our stability, our human talent, our legal security, and our vision of sustainable development. We celebrate the opening of this new manufacturing center in Orotina, as well as the creation of new opportunities for Costa Ricans living outside the GMA."

Jorge Sequeira, Managing Director of CINDE, added, “We welcome FlowZone to Costa Rica. We appreciate the trust they have placed in our country and CINDE as they relocate their operations. That is an example of the new nearshoring, for which Costa Rica has proven to be a strategic ally thanks to our triple-P promise: people, planet, and prosperity. We are confident that FlowZone’s presence will support development outside the Greater Metropolitan Area, where, between 2016 and 2020, we recorded 15% annual employment growth in CINDE companies.”
