Boston Scientific Expands its Presence in Costa Rica with New Operations in Cartago 

  • Boston Scientific is the largest employer and exporter of medical devices in Costa Rica.  
  • The company already employs more than 7000 people at El Coyol de Alajuela and La Aurora de Heredia. 
San José. February 16th, 2023. Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE: BSX) - a world leader in innovative medical devices that improve patients' lives around the world - announced the expansion of its operations by adding a new manufacturing plant in Costa Rica. The new facility is in Cartago province. 

“We are grateful to our employees in the region who have continued to deliver life-changing technologies to our customers and their patients,” said Paudie O’Connor, senior vice president, Global Supply Chain, Boston Scientific. “As we expand our Costa Rican operations into Cartago, we will continue to develop our talent and capabilities.”
 
During the celebration of Boston Scientific's new site in Cartago, the company also announced a new investment in a facility of approximately 40,000 sq. m. to be developed in the same Business Park, La Lima. This project is slated for completion in early 2025. 

The event was attended by Mr. Stephan Brunner, Vice President of the Republic; Mrs. Paula Bogantes Zamora, Minister of Science, Innovation, Technology, and Telecommunications; Mrs. Indiana Trejos, Acting Minister of Foreign Trade; Mr. Jorge Sequeira, General Manager of CINDE; and company executives.
 
Manuel Tovar, Minister of Foreign Trade, pointed out: "The expansion of Boston Scientific in our country is one more proof of the strength of our business climate and investors' confidence in our economy. The close relationship between Costa Rica and the company has created more than 7,000 jobs over 19 years, and we know it will bring many more benefits. This is an exciting time for our country, and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with leading companies like Boston Scientific to drive economic growth and the well-being of our people."

The company already employs more than 7 000 people at El Coyol de Alajuela and La Aurora de Heredia. The new facilities in Cartago will generate approximately 1 200 new jobs.

"Boston Scientific is one of the most important players in the Life Sciences Sector in Costa Rica, being the largest employer and exporter by volume of medical devices in the country. The opening in Cartago and the announcement of the new megaproject give a clear message of the development and competitiveness of the country in this industry", said Jorge Sequeira, Managing Director of CINDE.

"The life sciences sector exported more than $4.5 billion in 2022, remaining Costa Rica's main export product," Sequeira added.

Boston Scientific has established itself as a leader in the Life Sciences industry, being a success story in Costa Rica. An example of this was the opening of Research and Development operations in 2012 an area that designs and maintains several products used worldwide.
