  • The global science-led biopharmaceutical company will be hiring for 60 jobs in 2021 for a total employee team of 320.
  • The new offices in Escazú represent an investment of US$8 million.
  • The inauguration is part of AstraZeneca’s 20th anniversary celebration of its Costa Rican operation to take place next year.

San Jose, December 2, 2020. The multinational firm AstraZeneca is expanding in Costa Rica with the inauguration of its new offices in Roble Corporate Center, Escazú, an investment of US$8 million.

The company also announced it will be hiring for 60 jobs in 2021, adding to its current 260 employees for a total of 320.

AstraZeneca, which in 2021 will celebrate twenty years of operating in Costa Rica, is housing the operations of its Financial Services and Sourcing Centers for the Americas in the new offices.

Participating in the private inaugural event – and adhering to all Ministry of Health requirements - were Costa Rican President, Carlos Alvarado; Minister of Foreign Trade, Andrés Valenciano; CINDE’s Managing Director, Jorge Sequeira, and AstraZeneca representatives.

President Alvarado highlighted the importance of the partnership the country has had with this outstanding health firm for almost two decades, when it launched its operations on national soil, and that “has been recently reinforced with the agreement we signed for supply of the potential COVID-19 vaccine it is developing with Oxford University, which will enable us to protect a half million people.

“This operational expansion demonstrates the confidence such a major company has for continuing to invest and creating jobs in Costa Rica. We’re renewing our promise to continue building our human talent and provide the conditions to keep attracting investment that generates economic growth and great job opportunities,” Alvarado added.

Foreign Trade Minister, Andrés Valenciano, thanked the company for its confidence in this country and commented, “we are very pleased with the announcement of AstraZeneca’s expansion, since it reaffirms for us the potential we offer and that the country’s value proposition based on the triple P - planet, person, and prosperity - is on target. At the same time, it is a great responsibility, because it reminds us that to attract business with purpose we must: i) ensure an increasingly competitive business environment so that companies can build linkages; ii) work hard at continuously improving our public policy; and iii) build our human talent. We celebrate this great news, the new opportunities deriving from this for Costa Ricans, and its contribution to vitalizing and reactivating our economy.”

The new offices have a total area of 3,615 m2, the LEED sustainable building certificate, and a physical and technological infrastructure that helps improve employee well-being.

“We congratulate AstraZeneca on this new investment in Costa Rica, which will enable it to expand its financial and sourcing activity for the region,” said CINDE Managing Director Jorge Sequeira Picado. “Thanks to this reinvestment, 85% of the free trade zone jobs created in Costa Rica fall under this category. The new LEED-certified facilities are a reflection that it is possible to invest in sustainable environments and with purpose, spearheading the country strategy to attract investment.”

Rafael Mendoza, AstraZeneca’s President for Central America and the Caribbean, noted that “at AstraZeneca we are reaffirming our commitment to Costa Rica as the hub of our Central American and Caribbean operations, creating shared value and building partnerships to improve patient quality of life - at the core of everything we do - with access to innovative solutions that contribute to a sustainable health ecosystem. We have confidence in the country and its human talent, and we reaffirm our commitment to continue investing in Costa Rica as we have done for the last 20 years.”

Financial Services Center Leader for the Americas, Reinhold Gröbner, indicated that “at AstraZeneca we push the boundaries of science to deliver medicines that change patients’ lives. We make this a reality thanks to the commitment and talent of our employees, who ensure high value-added services for our commercial operations, scientific units, and manufacturing plants as an integral part of our corporate vision. Our team’s performance has made possible the continued expansion of our Financial Services Center and opening of the Sourcing Services Center in Costa Rica.”
