CINDE Reveals the Careers, Certifications, and Skills the Multinational Market is Looking for in Costa Rica

  1. The study provides the most up-to-date snapshot of the qualifications required by the following sectors: corporate services and digital technologies, life sciences, and manufacturing.
  2. Specialized engineering, finance, and cloud certifications are ranking higher in the demand for human capital.

San José, Costa Rica, May 14, 2026. Multinational companies operating in Costa Rica are redefining the talent profile they need to scale their operations in the country.

According to the most recent excerpt from CINDE’s study, “Vital Statistics: Most In-Demand Careers,” the three most dynamic sectors of the Costa Rican economy all demand professionals with training in engineering, business administration, and finance, with differences in technical specializations and certifications depending on the sector. The study provides the most up-to-date snapshot of the human capital required by the country's foreign direct investment ecosystem.

“This study stems from the need to give the training ecosystem a concrete compass. Costa Rica competes globally for high-value investments, and this requires a precise understanding of the talent multinational companies need today and how those needs are evolving with the current technological disruption. When comparing the results with our previous measurement, we see how operations have become more complex. Demand has diversified, specialized, and begun to require skill combinations that did not previously exist in a single profile,” stated Marianela Urgellés, CINDE’s managing director.

Corporate Services and Digital Technologies: Demand is Becoming Specialized

In the corporate services and digital technology sector, the most in-demand university degrees are in business administration, finance and accounting, and industrial engineering, followed by systems engineering, information technology engineering, and business administration with a focus on human resources. The critical focus of this sector is on digital scalability, cloud infrastructure, and agile project management.

One of the most significant findings compared to 2022 is the diversification of demand. The need for generic computer-related engineering has shifted towards more specific profiles such as knowledge of systems engineering, information technology engineering, and computer engineering, indicating that companies are seeking specialists with expertise in specific architectures.

On the technical side, the most in-demand specializations are business executive and customer service, accounting and finance, and business administration, together with software development, computer networking and computing, data analysis, and artificial intelligence. The most highly valued specific certifications are in project management, Six Sigma, Microsoft Azure, AWS, Salesforce Admin, Linux, and Python.

Life Sciences: Regulatory Precision and Evolution towards Applied Engineering

The critical focus of life sciences is on industrial precision, strict regulatory compliance, and process optimization. The most in-demand university degrees are in industrial engineering, business administration, and quality engineering, the latter clocking in directly at third place – a ranking it lacked in 2022 – reflecting the growing demands of organizations such as the FDA and standards such as ISO 13485.

A relevant structural change compared to 2022 is that degrees such as in chemistry, materials engineering, and microbiology have dropped out of the ranking, replaced by applied engineering profiles.

“We see how the sector of our main export product is transitioning from pure sciences towards disciplines with direct application in advanced manufacturing and production process automation,” added Vanessa Gibson, director of Investment Climate at CINDE.

In technical specialties, production management, precision mechanics, and industrial maintenance top the list. In certifications, 60% of the demand is concentrated in lean quality and regulatory compliance, with Six Sigma, ISO 13485, GMP, FDA regulation, and electromechanical engineering credentials receiving the most requests.

Manufacturing: the Entry Level Becomes More Technical

The manufacturing sector is experiencing the most significant transformation in its talent demand. The most sought-after university degrees are in industrial engineering, chemical engineering, and electronic engineering, followed by business administration, electrical engineering, electromechanical engineering, finance and accounting, mechatronics engineering, chemistry, and business administration with a focus on human resources. Chemical engineering now ranks second, up from sixth place in 2022, possibly indicating the expansion of chemical process operations in the country. Electronic engineering entered the ranking directly at third place.

In technical specialties, industrial electronics, production management, and industrial maintenance lead the list. In certifications, 49% of the demand is for engineering and manufacturing, with Six Sigma, electromechanics, and supplier quality certifications being most highly valued.

Strategic Skills: the Common Denominator

Beyond the sectoral differences in technical training, the study reveals a striking convergence on behavioral competencies. Communication ranks first in all three sectors, without exception. Teamwork and adaptability consistently appear among the five most valued skills, regardless of the industry.

The study's conclusion is clear: multinational operations seek specialized technical capabilities, but scale through universal strategic skills. Communication and adaptability are no longer complementary skills; they function as the core operating system of the modern enterprise.

“The possibility of multiplying market relevance by incorporating technological capacities is real. A business administrator who masters data analytics, a chemical engineer who handles process automation, or a finance technician certified in cloud platforms not only expands their employment options but also becomes the type of talent that multinationals actively seek to scale their operations from Costa Rica,” Gibson concluded.
