Boston Scientific becomes the largest medical devices company in Costa Rica

AUGUST 21st 2019

●Company celebrates 15 years of operations in Costa Rica and expands workforce to 4500 individuals.

San José, Costa Rica. August 21, 2019. The multinational company Boston Scientific Corporation, specialized on the design, manufacture, distribution and sale of minimally invasive medical devices of the highest technology, celebrated its 15th anniversary in Costa Rica reaching a workforce of 4,500 employees and collaborators. This makes Boston Scientific the largest medical device manufacturer in Costa Rica.

The President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, visited El Coyol plant, joined by the Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica, Dyalá Jiménez, and Managing Director of CINDE, Jorge Sequeira, to recognize Boston Scientific as one of Costa Rica’s pioneering companies in the medical device industry.

"We are very pleased to be here, sharing with the people who work at Boston Scientific, a company that through its growth demonstrates the capacity of Costa Rican human talent and their commitment to job creation in the country," said the President.

Boston Scientific manufactures minimally invasive devices in the areas of Endoscopy, Urology and Pelvic Health, Peripheral Intervention, Electrophysiology, Interventional Cardiology and Neuromodulation.

The Foreign Trade Minister, Dyalá Jiménez, reiterated that "this reflects not only the dynamism and continued growth of the life sciences sector but also the confidence the company has placed in the country and our human resources."

Its operations in Costa Rica began in 2004 when the first manufacturing plant was opened in La Aurora de Heredia. In 2009, the second plant was inaugurated in El Coyol de Alajuela, becoming the first company in the sector to have two manufacturing plants in the country.

“We are pleased to welcome President Alvarado to our plant and extend our gratitude for Costa Rican commitment to work with the private sector to promote and consolidate foreign direct investment that offers better life quality in the country,” said Luis Javier Serrano, Vice President of Operations of the Coyol plant. “Moreover, this is a celebration of our longstanding success in Costa Rica and a recognition of our dedicated workforce, which continues to grow and develop, further supporting company operations regionally and globally.”

In June, the company announced plans to hire hundreds of employees in different areas of expertise including engineering (mechanics, electromechanics, electronics, materials, electrical, industrial, chemical and mechatronics), finance and accounting. In 2018 more than 1300 new employees were hired.

“We celebrate these 15 years of Boston Scientific in Costa Rica and appreciate this vote of confidence in the country. The company is a clear example of the development of comprehensive corporate strategies; where in one single place manufacturing processes, logistics, corporate services, research and development are executed. The talent of more than 4,500 employees reflects in thousands of patients who today enjoy a quality of life thanks to the medical devices created here” commented Jorge Sequeira, Managing Director of CINDE.

Its manufacturing operations are certified as carbon neutral since 2016 and as ISO 50001 in 2017. Its building located in El Coyol de Alajuela was the first one to be certified Lead Silver in Costa Rica.
Recently, the company won the Shingo Prize, an international prize that awards operational excellence and world-class manufacturing. Its Corporate Social Responsibility strategy is based on three areas: People, Planet and Practices. In 2018, the operations located in Costa Rica registered nearly 11,000 hours of volunteering.

Boston Scientific currently employs over 4,500 employees in Costa Rica of which more than 50% are women.
