“During the last quarter of 2015, there were 25 key investments made by various corporations in the country, which allowed us to reach our annual goal. This has meant the generation of more than 4,500 jobs in Costa Rica,” said President of Costa Rica Luis Guillermo Solís Rivera. “This expansion by VMware is another demonstration of the faith investors have in our country thanks to the stability, competitive advantages, and quality talent pool Costa Rica has to offer.”

VMware was founded in the United States in 1998 with headquarters in Palo Alto, California. The company began operations in Costa Rica in late 2012. The company grew its talent pool of collaborators significantly from 2013 to 2014, an 83% increase. Today, VMware has more than 480 collaborators in Costa Rica, and continues to have a strong commitment to growth in 2016, positioning it as the largest center for VMware in Latin America.

“VMware has found exceptional talent in Costa Rica, which has been an enabler for our local and regional expansion,” said Ariel Vargas, general manager of VMware in Costa Rica. “There’s opportunity for the further development of talent in various areas, including shared services, IT and sales support.”

From the new center of operations, VMware manages internal processes and services that support global or regional organizations in three principal areas: shared services, IT and technical support, and specialized sales services. VMware collaborators in Costa Rica are dedicated to human resources, payroll, accounting, financial analysis, project management, contract management, licensing compliance, sales support, sales development, web development, graphic design, applications support, among other key areas.

“Costa Rica is an ideal location, as there is good adoption of the Engish language, and the right combination of technical skills,” Vargas said. “Further, the passion and dedication demonstrated by our collaborators is impressive, and they have integrated well within the VMware culture. At VMware, we value strategic thinking and innovation, which are fundamental to our company values.”

Jorge Sequeira, the director general of CINDE said VMware is an example of the evolution of the services sector in Costa Rica and the level of operational sophistication possible in this country.

“VMware is a model technology company for others to follow,” Sequeira said. “The services sector is one of the major drivers for employment in the country, with more than 50,000 individuals employed in this area. Services companies like VMware, represent 52 percent of the companies present in the Zona Franca. These companies export 65 percent of these services.”

According to the Minister of Commerce, Alexander Mora: “Office expansions like VMware’s bring a great deal of benefit to the country. These expansions enable the export of more than US $2 million in digital technologies and related services. Services exports overall exceeded $6.3 million in 2014, well above the 2010 figures of $4.3 million.”
