Proquinal Costa Rica to Reinvest US$20 Million in Manufacturing Plant and Add up to 50 Jobs

•Investment will include the acquisition of Italian machinery to allow for the manufacture of coated fabrics destined for high-performance markets.

Costa Rica, July 1, 2020. Proquinal Costa Rica, a company member of the Spradling Group, recently announced a reinvestment of US$20 million in its coated fabric manufacturing plant in Costa Rica, with potential to hire 50 more people at its Spradling Free Zone Park plant, located in Coyol, Alajuela; these new positions will be added to its current list of 500 employees.

This represents the third major investment that the company has made in the country; the first was in 2002 and the second in 2014.

The reinvestment will allow the implementation of a new process within the plant, which will increase its export capacity. The company manufactures coated fabrics for high-performance markets, including hospitals, yachts, school buses, stadiums, airports, and hotels.

The Minister of Foreign Trade, Dyalá Jiménez, commented that “Proquinal's decision to reinvest in our country and, with it, create new employment opportunities for Costa Ricans, is very positive news. During 2019, a total of 44 new projects were created within Costa Rica, of which 25 correspond to reinvestments. The Central Government welcomes this news with great enthusiasm, and we will continue working to achieve our maximum potential and attract further foreign direct investment, which contributes so greatly to the growth of the Costa Rican economy.”

Iván Sepúlveda, CEO of the Spradling Group, confirmed the success of the operation in Costa Rica and thanked the qualified human talent, an environment of democratic stability, and consistent improvement in various processes, in order to remain competitive in a world of increasing demands.

Additionally, this demonstrates the fact that the legal security granted by Costa Rica to the Free Zone Regime, represents a key decision factor when establishing this type of project.

Proquinal General Manager, Moisés Hernández, expressed his satisfaction with this new investment, saying it increases Costa Rica’s export capacity to high-demand markets; he also noted how the company’s employee success stories go hand-in-hand with the growth of Proquinal Costa Rica.

He also expressed the importance of the Free Trade Regime as an engine for development; this is evident through the productive chains, knowledge transfer, and development of new business opportunities in the service sector.

Jorge Sequeira Picado, Managing Director of CINDE, commented, “By the end of 2019, the advanced manufacturing sector had generated a cumulative total of 9,630 jobs and added a total of 44 companies recruited by CINDE. Proquinal, a company in this sector, has announced its third reinvestment in the country, which will allow the company to add new processes and more jobs to its local operations, and thus expand its services to life science companies. This is very much in line with the convergence of sectors that we today promote as part of the fourth industrial revolution. The most recent example was the production of a reusable, hospital-use waterproof fabric to be employed by healthcare personnel.”

Additional Investment in a New Free Trade Zone
Additionally, the Spradling Group inaugurated a new Free Trade Zone Park in El Coyol de Alajuela, on Calle Los Llanos. The first tenant of the park is the company itself; there are 20 hectares available to accept new investment.

The company also announced its strong commitment to sustainability issues, leading them to invest in the installation of a solar power park. This will allow the company to operate via renewable energy sources and thus reduce their ecological footprint.
