Press Release

In April, renowned design institute will give workshops at the Omar Dengo Foundation

FEBRUARY 21st 2018

Registrations are already open on the website. There are 15 workshops open to the public from 9-27 April this year.
• The program has a scholarship system of 50% for students and teachers, and 35% for SMEs and emerging companies that register first.
• Also, it has discounts for companies that register before March 2.

San José, Wednesday, February 21, 2018. From April 9th to 27th, Costa Rica will have three weeks full of innovation, design and digital technologies, taught by professionals internationally renowned for their contributions in such areas.

For the first time, Costa Rica will have the privilege to be the host country of the Summer School of the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (CIID). It is recognized as one of the main references of design in the world and it chose Costa Rica to be the first country where it will teach 15 workshops, outside its native Denmark.

In the last 12 years, CIID has worked closely with the city of Copenhagen and companies such as: Mozilla, Volvo, Philips, Intel, and Novo Nordisk. Its advisory committee includes members of Apple, Google, and the United Nations.

Costa Ricans and participants from other countries, who wish to register, will learn from the hand of 25 international experts, recognized for setting the pace in innovation, with experience in companies such as: IDEO, Microsoft and Google, to share their skills and enrich the creative value of the country.

Among the experts that will come to Costa Rica is Massimo Banzi, one of the creators of Arduino, leader of the Open Hardware, which allows creating devices such as automatic drone’s pilots or robot controllers.

The workshops will be taught in English at the Omar Dengo Foundation. Part of the courses that will be offered are: Design of interactive spaces, Design of Services, Visualization of data, and Introduction to research focused on people.

"Thanks to its ‘learning-by-doing’ approach, the CIID Summer School will be a catalyst for change where new strategic conversations are started across all the participants as well as the people who will attend the open talks and exhibitions", said Simona Maschi, co-founder and director of CIID.

Each workshop lasts one week, the person enrolled can participate in one to three courses. Each workshop costs US $1,250 and has a maximum capacity of 20 people, with a schedule from 9 am to 5 pm.

Enrollments are now open to the public, and the program has a 50% scholarship system for students and teachers, and 35% for small, medium and emerging companies. In addition to the workshops, CIID will give free talks during the three weeks in the country.

"Having the presence of CIID in Costa Rica is of great importance for the country: it opens the possibilities of study at the highest level, both for students and professionals. We will have experts who set a trend in the world thanks to their creations, and they will share their experiences through the workshops", explained Vanessa Gibson, Head of Investment Climate from CINDE, the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency.

The initiative is supported by local actors that include CINDE, Mesoamerica, the International Design Festival (FID), the Business Alliance for Development (AED), the Omar Dengo Foundation, the Inter-American Development Bank (BID), as well as the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) and the BAC financial institution.

Some experts who will come to Costa Rica
Massimo Banzi: He is one of the creators of Arduino, leader of Open Hardware, available to everyone. The low cost of the plates of this brand allows to create devices for the Internet of things, drivers for robots, toys and automatic pilots of drones.

Minnie Bredouw: Senior Design Manager at IDEO (world design company). He has developed programs ranging from the design of a reproductive health program for adolescents to creating a digital coaching platform for first generation university students.

Yasaman Sheri: Designer interested in knowing how humans interact. He has designed programs for Graduate Students at the NASA Ames Research Center, while working with Autodesk, Google and IDEO.
