Press Release

Coloplast will install modern plant in Costa Rica

MAY 15th 2018

•The company holds the first place in the world’s ranking from the ostomy and continence subsectors.
•Within the following 2 years, it will hire the first 100 collaborators.
•In 2017, Costa Rica exported US$2.847 million thanks to medical devices, making them the main product exported by the country.

San José, May 15, 2018. The Danish company, Coloplast, which belongs to the ostomy and continence Life Sciences sector, chose Cartago, Costa Rica, the location where it will install a manufacturing plant for medical devices, the first one of its kind in the American continent.

Coloplast will begin its operations in a temporary plant in La Lima Free Zone, where a first group of 100 Costa Ricans will elaborate ostomy devices (which allow the urine and stools pass by), as well as continence devices (bladder or intestines control of functions). The personnel will be hired within the next 2 years.

The company –the first one from Denmark within Costa Rica’s medical cluster– announced that it expects to build its new facility in the same industrial park, which is estimated to have its full operations by the summer of 2020.

Carlos Alvarado, President of the Republic, expressed his complacency with the announcement. “This medical device expansion in our country, with a prestigious company such as Coloplast, is within the objectives we have traced to strengthen the quality employment generation with a territorial focus”, he said.

Jorge Sequeira, Managing Director of the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency (CINDE), said that Coloplast’s establishment in the country, after a strict analysis, proves that Costa Rica is well positioned in the Life Sciences industry, one of the most sophisticated and high-quality supervision.

He added: “Coloplast’s arrival marks an important milestone in the diversification of markets that belong to the Life Sciences sector. In Costa Rica, it will produce the first medical devices of its kind.”

“We celebrate the quality employment opportunities that it will generate in the future, the contribution to Cartago’s development and the growth that it will generate in this important industry for Costa Rica”, affirmed Sequeira.

The Minister of Foreign Trade in office, Duayner Salas, highlighted the importance of this announcement: “Costa Rica has positioned itself as a destination leader in the Life Sciences sector. Our renown path allows us to attract high-level projects, such as Coloplast, a company that holds the first place in the world in the ostomy and continence procedures. We trust that this new operation will contribute, considerably, to transfer sophisticated and innovative knowledge, which will increase the general conditions of employment. It also becomes part of the new high-level operations that decided to establish in Cartago. From the Central government, we celebrate this news and reaffirm our compromise to work hard to attract more investments, that like this one, find in Costa Rica a strategic ally to develop its operations.”

In 2017, Costa Rica exported US$2.847 million, making the medical devices the main product exported by the country.

Those interested in applying to one of Coloplast’s positions must be attentive to its official announcement, which will reveal the following steps and contacts where they can send their information or present their resumes.
