What is CINDE?

The Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency, CINDE, is a private non-profit apolitical organization. It was founded in 1982 and in 1984 it was confirmed by the government to be of public interest. CINDE endeavors to advance the country's social and economic development by promoting foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country.

The Board of Directors and Associates represent both the private and business sectors of the country. The combined vision that both sectors bring forward has strengthened CINDE's ability to cope with market needs.

CINDE has promoted and facilitated the installation of widely recognized companies in the country including leading companies such as Intel, Baxter Healthcare, SYKES, Western Union, Remec, Procter & Gamble, Boston Scientific, CYTYC, Inamed, and Pycon, amongst others.

CINDE's effort to attract foreign direct investment has been acknowledged by several international entities, such as the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which has stated that "without a doubt CINDE, with few resources and tons of creativity, has been able to assimilate successful experiences from other latitudes, and has positively contributed to the modernization and development of Costa Rica." Another study conducted by the Inter-American Development Bank in September of 2003, stated that "CINDE's activity generated a change in the country's foreign commerce structure in conjunction with the establishment of investment incentives". In addition, the United Nations Conference of Trade and Development (UNCTAD) recognized and granted CINDE the classification of "Advanced Investment Promotion Agency" in its 2002 World Investment Report.

CINDE also actively participates in internationally recognized forums, which are related to the monitoring and promotion of foreign investment, and currently holds a seat in the steering committee of the World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies (WAIPA).
